About the Northville, Novi and Plymouth, Michigan Area The Northville community derives its name from its location in northwest Wayne County. It began in the early 1800's as a small trading center when farming and lumbering were the main occupations. It is distinguished by its rolling topography, characteristics of its glacial origin. Located between Ann Arbor and Detroit, it is well situated for those who prefer to live away from the major cities.
Northville is one of the more affluent communities in Wayne and Oakland Counties. Its residents are well educated and earn above County average. Most students attend the Northville School District rather than private schools, a tribute to the quality of its school system.

The city and township retain separate governments, although they share the school district.

It was first settled in 1825, and in 1851 was a stagecoach stop between Detroit and Lansing. In the 1980's, Novi made a rapid transition from a rural residential area to a rapidly developing commerce, industrial and residential community.
Today Novi is a growing and progressive community that covers approximately thirty one square miles.
