Livonia History 101

This community was first settled by New England pioneers. By March 1835, Livonia Township was established thanks to an act by the Legislature of the Territory of Michigan.

Settlers gave the community the name Livonia because of towns by the same name in New York and Pennsylvania. The name dates back to a region of the Baltic Sea which is located in present day Estonia and Latvia.

Ultimately this community was incorporated into a city on May 23, 1950.

Modern-Day Livonia Offers Plenty to Residents

Today, this community is home to more than 96,000 residents, making it the ninth largest municipality in Michigan.

This district is highly ranked, having been ranked in the top 5 school districts statewide since the 1960s.

  • Churchill High School
  • Stevenson High School

Meanwhile, a portion of northeast Livonia is served by the Clarenceville School District, which also features some excellent schools.

  • Ladywood High School
  • St. Edith
  • St. Genevieve 
  • St. Michael

There are also a number of private and public colleges and universities in the area, including:

  • Madonna University
  • Schoolcraft College
  • Davenport University

Recreational Amenities Everywhere You Look in Livonia

This community is home to several commercial and industrial sectors. It’s also home to Laurel Park Place, which is an upscale fashion mall comprised of more than 70 stores. Carson’s and Von Maur department stores are the mall’s anchors.

Meanwhile, the Livonia Hockey Association is located here. Considered the largest amateur hockey association in the state, it is an amenity that most residents are proud to have located in their town.

The Livonia City Soccer Club is also located here, bringing with it the distinction of being one of the largest soccer programs in the state. It boasts more than 1,300 participants.
