A Little Background on Plymouth MI

First settled in 1825, Plymouth was incorporated as a city in 867 before becoming a city in 1932.

It is commonly believed that Keziah (Benjamin) and William Starkweather were the first to settle in the area.  The farms from Preston, Connecticut ultimately purchased 240 acres in the area, which would later become the starts of Plymouth.

The area saw a lot of growth with the development of the railroad in the area. 

Over the years, the community’s job industry has diversified as more and more people have relocated to Plymouth.

In 2009, the community was named 28th Best Place to Live in the United States by CNN Money Magazine.

Things to See and Do Here

One of the perks to living in Plymouth is that you’ll have access to all of the city’s recreation programs.  In fact, the city offers more than 50 programs for all age groups. 

The city also maintains an NHL-size ice arena as well as 12 parks.

And throughout the year, residents can partake in some top-notch public events, including:

  • Ice Sculpture Spectacular
  • Green Street Fair
  • Art in the Park

Here’s a fun fact: The Plymouth Ice Sculpture Spectacular is the largest and oldest ice carving festival in North America. The event, which was founded in 1982, draws about 500,000 people to Plymouth each year.  Now that’s impressive! 

Residents also enjoy a variety of shops and restaurants surrounding Kellogg Park, which many consider to be the town center.

Meanwhile, you’ll also live just 15 miles away from all the shopping and entertainment in Ann Arbor as well as just 26 miles from downtown Detroit.

Excellent Education in Plymouth

The Plymouth-Canton Community School District serves residents here.  The district is comprised of three high schools, five middle schools and 16 elementary schools.

Meanwhile, there are also a number of private schools in the area as well, including New Morning School and Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Schools.

The excellent selection of schools continues to be a top reason why many people choose to relocate to Plymouth.
