Canton, MI: A Fast-Growing Detroit Suburb

Canton might be considered a commuter town for Detroit but it’s so much more than that to its residents.

Located about 10 miles west of Detroit city limits, this charter township is considered one of the state’s fastest growing communities. By 2010, it had a population of 90,173, making it the state’s 11th largest community.

This History of this Michigan Community

This community was created by an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature in March 1834 using a portion of Plymouth Township.

It was named to honor the port and provincial capital of the same name in Imperial China.

In 1982, the Canton Historical Society and Museum opened to help preserve the community’s history. It is still operating to this day.

Modern Day Canton

Today, this 36 square mile community is popular for its easy access to Ann Arbor and Detroit as well as its high quality of life.

Residents also should know that there are two distinct communities located within this modern-day township: Sheldon and Cherry Hill.

Sheldon is located just west of Interstate 275 and was named after Timothy F. Sheldon, who bought the land in 1842.

Cherry Hill is a historic locale situated in the west of the township. It is well-known for its new urbanist community and is located right along the Lower River Rouge.

The Village Theater is also located there.
